The scheme of ‘Special Awards to Winners in International Sports Events and Their Coaches’ was introduced in the year 1986 primarily to compensate the medal winners of International Sports events for the expenses incurred on diet, training, preparations and for the deprivations suffered by them due to their devotion and service to sports. The Special Awards are also the expression of appreciation and gratitude of the nation to the medal winners for winning laurels for the country and for holding aloft the Indian flag in the field of international sports.
